2016 Scion iA vs 2016 Mazda2
When Scion announced earlier this year that it will be adding the first ever sedan to its lineup the speculation was that it may be closely related to the Yaris. It turns out that the new Scion iA will actually be branded a Yaris sedan in Canada. Not only will the iA be Scion’s first sedan, it will also be the first rebadged model in the lineup. For a brand that is looking to revive itself offering a rebadged version of a mainstream nameplate will be a difficult obstacle to overcome.
Even more interesting is the fact that the new iA will use a competitor’s platform; Toyota and Mazda created a partnership that will allow the next Yaris, and iA, to be built on the Mazda2 underpinnings. Luckily, judging from Scion’s teaser image the two models won’t look alike. Although, they will share the same engine so driving and handling may be similar. It will be interesting to see how all three will differ from each other. It will come down to what the buyer wants in looks and style. That means Scion needs to step it up a notch if they want to survive.
More info about the new Scion iA will be available when the sedan debuts at the 2015 New York Auto Show.
