2016 Ram 1500 Rebel vs. 2017 Ford Raptor
Two factory-customized pick up trucks were unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. The Ram 1500 Rebel was introduced for the very first time while Ford showed off its second-generation 2017 Ford Raptor. Although the two trucks are not direct competitors they do share a few noticeable similarities. In the rear, each truck has a larger-than-usual moniker on its tailgate, just to make sure you know what you’re driving behind. In the front, a large plastic-looking grill with huge lettering has become synonymous with Ford Raptor since it debuted in 2010.
Why Ram would want to mimic the grill is perplexing. Luckily, the trucks don’t compete in the same category. Still, the first thought that comes to mind when looking at the Ram Rebel is, ‘hey, I’ve seen that grill before.’ And it wasn’t on a Ram, which isn’t a good first impression to make in such a competitive segment. Just think what the salespeople will have to endure at the dealerships. How will they reply when a potential buyer comes in and asks for that ‘Raptor-looking Ram’. Sure, they can laugh it off, or turn it into a sale, but the damage to the brand is done when your model reminds someone of another competitor.
