The BIG question of the day is, Did Chrysler resurrect the PT Cruiser in the form of the Fiat 500L? At least one person seems to think so. I can’t recall the forum I was on nor the exact topic but it had something to do with ugly cars on the road today. One comment included a photo of the Chrysler PT Cruiser with a caption that read, “But they don’t make them anymore”. A reply to that comment read, “Yes they do”, and had a photo of the Fiat 500L. Aside from the ugly factor the two cars have nothing in common. But it’s Friday, so let’s compare them anyway.
While the PT Cruiser’s retro styling was reminiscent of a 1930s street rod the 500L is based on the modern redesign of the Fiat 500. These are two completely different influences that share a love-it or hate-it design. In terms of popularity the PT Cruiser had a huge following. With several special packages and hundreds of after-market accessories its owners organized countrywide meetups to show off their customized hatchbacks.
The PT Cruiser was an icon of its time, something that the Fiat 500L will never attain, and probably never strived for. It tailors to people who like Italian styling and versatility, and aren’t interested in attending festivals to celebrate a car. To be fair, Chrysler probably never expected the PT Cruiser to be such a success either. But it was so popular that Chevrolet tried to jump on the bandwagon with its HHR only to discover the fad was over.
The PT Cruiser wins the popularity contest, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
