2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe vs. 2016 BMW X6
Its SUV stature combined with a coupe-like design put the BMW X6 in a category of its own that many thought unnecessary. A sporty four-door coupe with an SUV body, awkward looks, and limited functionality appeared to be a one-off but has garnered enough attention to spawn competition. What appeared to be a one-off at the time has garnered enough attention to spur competition in the category we’ll call the luxury crossover coupe segment. Mercedes-Benz has revealed the GLE, its own jacked-up coupe that’s based on the M-Class SUV.
Mercedes calls it a fusion between a real SUV and a sports coupe. It’s easy to spot the fusion on the exterior; the GLE could easily be mistaken for a full-sized SUV when looking at it head on, and the confusion sets in at the slightest angle view when the coupe silhouette begins to appear. Looking at it from the rear will make you wonder why they turned a sedan into a 4x4. But that’s the growing trend in the wide world of Crossovers. The Mercedes-Benz GLE will be available mid 2015, and will include the brand’s first AMG Sport model, the GLE 450 AMG.
